Popular Areas of Study
Black Church Studies
Black church studies at BSK provides a multidisciplinary lens for understanding the centrality of the Black church experience in African American history, culture and community life. Supported by the work of the Institute for Black Church Studies, students can pursue a certificate, MA or MDiv with this emphasis. All students at BSK are required to take a course in Black Church Studies.
Pastoral Care
Chaplains and pastoral counselors provide critical ministry to persons through hospitals, prisons, churches, the military and counseling centers. Ministers also find expertise in pastoral care to benefit the quality of their ministry. BSK has designed a program that provides training in pastoral care and counseling within the context of Master of Divinity studies. This emphasis enables students to take strong steps toward licensure or certification. A certificate in Pastoral Care is also available.
Rural Ministry
The Rural Ministry Program provides advanced theological and ministry studies for men and women who are preparing for life and ministry in rural congregations and communities. Rural congregations can play significant roles in their settings, contributing to the strength of families, the development of leaders, and the wider vibrancy of rural communities. In collaboration with the Berry Center, BSK offers an M.Div. with a concentration in Rural Ministry, as well as a for-credit BSK certificate in Rural Ministry.
Choose A Specialty (MA)
The Master of Arts in Ministry Studies degree is designed for students to engage in theological reflection and study in a self-selected area of Christian ministry or theological studies. Students are not required to choose from this list and can propose their own, but the following are a few potential specializations: Black Church Studies, Pastoral Care of the Congregation, Rural Ministry and Community Leadership, Social Ministry in the Past and Present, Preaching and Teaching in Congregational Ministry and more.
