Baptist Seminary of Kentucky Announces Dr. David Cassady as President
March 27, 2017
The Baptist Seminary of Kentucky (BSK) is proud to announce Dr. David Cassady as the school’s second president. BSK’s first president, Dr. Greg Earwood, served until his retirement in 2016. Cassady began serving in May 2017.
“I have long been impressed with the quality, creativity and contributions of graduates from BSK. It is exciting to be part of a seminary community that cares deeply about the vitality of congregations and the future of creative ministry leadership.” Cassady said.” I look forward to working with these forward-thinking board members, faculty, staff, alumni, students and BSK supporters to serve a Church that is facing new challenges and fresh opportunities. I am convinced BSK will play a growing role in the lives of ministers and churches.”Dr. Everett McCorvey, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said, “I am delighted to have Dr. Cassady join the BSK family. His experience, his world-wide connections, his dedication to the cause of teaching and preparing students for the ministry has made him an outstanding choice. I am excited for the BSK family of students, alumni, church leaders and the community at large to get to know him. He will do a tremendous job for the Seminary.”
“I look forward to Dr. Cassady’s leadership at BSK. Ardently Baptist in his identity, he also brings connections with other ecumenical partners around the world,” explained BSK student Sara M. Herrington Jones. “He has proven himself to be a thoughtful, prepared, creative, and energetic leader even with us during the search and discernment process. Dr. Cassady’s personal integrity and genuine ability to nurture relationships stood out as well. He supports student involvement and seeks to nurture student leadership within Baptist life — that excites me.”
Pastor and BSK alumni Bert Montgomery said, “I’ve known David Cassady for over 25 years. I continue to be inspired by his passion for knowledge, his intellectual curiosity, his quick wit, his deeply rooted faith, and his persistent love for the church. David’s imagination still amazes me, as does his unique gift of transforming ideas into reality. It feels completely natural to me (or, should I say, providential?) to welcome David formally to the BSK family as our next President.”
Over the last 30 years, Cassady has been serving churches directly and through organizational leadership in publishing, business, and curriculum development.
Cassady brings entrepreneurial experience as the founder and president of Faithlab, a growing communications and consulting firm that works with a wide range churches and religious nonprofits. As part of Faithlab’s work, Cassady assembled a team that created Faithelement, an innovative online Bible study curriculum now used by hundreds of classes. He can be heard weekly on the Faithelement podcast, and provides support to the Glass Half Full podcast. Two years ago, Faithlab launched Youth Ministry Conversations, led by BSK alumni Andrew Noe. Youth Ministry Conversations works with youth ministers to produce field-tested resources for youth ministry. “I am grateful for the talented and experienced team continuing the growing work of Faithlab and Faithelement. It is because of them that I have the freedom to pursue this new work with BSK,” explained Cassady.
He also serves as the Church Resources Editor and is a member of the book acquisitions team for Nurturing Faith. The organization, together with the team at Faithlab, publishes around 15 titles per year, as well as the popular Nurturing Faith Bible Studies.
Over the last 8 years, Cassady has taught philosophy and religion courses as an adjunct at Wesleyan College, a historic women’s college in Macon, Georgia. He also serves on the Christian Education and Nurture Committee for the Baptist World Alliance. Cassady serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Highland Hills Baptist Church. He can also be heard weekly on the Faithelement podcast.
While finishing his dissertation in 1992, Cassady became the first employee at Smyth & Helwys Publishing. He began working as the Youth Design Editor, then became the Managing Editor, and later the Vice President for the Editorial Division. By the conclusion of his 16 years of work there, he was the Executive Vice President and Publisher. Cassady’s interest in curriculum development led to the creation of numerous curriculum lines and resources at the company, most of which continue to be published.
Cassady earned a B.S. in Religion and Philosophy from Ouachita Baptist University, studied philosophy at the graduate level at Baylor University, and received an M.Div. C.E. and Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. While in seminary he served as Associate Pastor for Education and Youth at Buechel Park Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
