Dr. Jemar Tisby to Bring Commencement Address

Dr. Jemar Tisby is professor of history at Simmons College of Kentucky. He is an historian, author, speaker, and public theologian whose work focuses on race, religion, and social justice. With a deep commitment to addressing the historical and contemporary intersections of racial inequality and faith, Dr. Tisby has become a leading voice in conversations about racial reconciliation and systemic justice.
He is the author of the New York Times bestselling book *The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism*. This groundbreaking work explores the historical complicity of American churches in perpetuating racial injustice, offering a call to action for Christians to confront their past and work toward a more equitable future.
Dr. Tisby’s second book, *How to Fight Racism: Courageous Christianity and the Journey Toward Racial Justice*, provides a practical framework for engaging in anti-racist work. A companion workbook, *How to Fight Racism: Young Reader’s Edition*, extends these principles to younger audiences, fostering a new generation of advocates for equity and justice.
Dr. Tisby holds a PhD in History from the University of Mississippi, where his scholarship focused on race, religion, and social movements in the 20th-century United States. He is also a co-founder of The Witness: A Black Christian Collective, an organization dedicated to empowering Black Christians to engage in social justice through a faith-based lens.
Dr. Tisby frequently appears on national media platforms and podcasts to discuss issues of racial justice and Christianity. His work continues to challenge individuals and institutions to reckon with the past, confront systemic inequities, and pursue a more just and loving future. Through his books, lectures, and leadership, Dr. Jemar Tisby inspires transformative action at the intersection of faith and justice.
