BSK Leaders Write About Juneteenth

Leaders from BSK’s Institute for Black Church Studies have written pieces about Juneteenth. Check them out below.

“Through the events of 2020 and since, many in the white community have been confronted by the injustice and pain their African American sisters and brothers face every day. What they saw stopped them in their tracks, they could not continue to avoid or disregard. They had to listen, they had to seek understanding. We should not gloss over this because it was an expression of compassion. People listened. After listening, some asked, “What can we do?”

Listening is Not Enough: The Black Community Needs Allies with Compassion and Courage by Lewis Brogdon (Director, Institute for Black Church Studies at BSK).

“The concept of “keep sweet” is a manipulative tool that forces conformity within faith communities. “Keep sweet” is synonymous with the Southern niceties that spew out of white religion, keeping people from disagreeing with their religious leaders or practicing civil disobedience.”

Don’t Keep Sweet: Why White Christians need to Celebrate Juneteenth by Erica Whitaker (Associate Director, Institute for Black Church Studies at BSK).
