This Tuesday, October 17, Rev. Erica Whitaker will be lecturing on White Jesus Seen in the Black Church at Wayland Baptist Theological Seminary. In this lecture, Whitaker explores the history of why images and icons of white Jesus are seen in black churches. She gives a historical account of the evolution of white Jesus in American History, correlating key period where images of white Jesus began showing up in predominantly black spaces. Using the stained glass seen in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church as an example of white Jesus seen in the black church, she provides lived examples of the theological implications that white Jesus has on Christianity in America.
