Dr. Laura Levens, BSK’s Associate Professor of Christian Missions and Director of the Master of Arts in Ministry Studies (MAMS), traveled to Louisiana this fall to visit with several BSK students. These students will be taking the capstone course for the MAMS this fall and spring. Traveling around the Baton Rouge area of Louisiana, Dr. Levens was able to meet with BSK students Shelton Dixon, Joseph Mitchell, and Gerald Perkins.
Because BSK offers classes online, opportunities to be with each other in person are always especially valued. Dr. Levens took this time to visit her students so that they could talk about their potential research topics for the capstone course that is a part of the MAMS. In addition to this practical reason, Dr. Levens was also able to see these students in their own contexts, meet their families, and see the churches that they pastor.
Dr. Levens recalled her visit, saying, “This visit was very helpful to me as a faculty member. I have a better sense of the students’ contexts, their lives, and what matters to their communities. The visit was also helpful to the students. They enjoyed showing me their churches and communities, and they appreciated the time to describe and examine where they lived and worked. They also appreciated the information about the coming year and the intentionality of connecting their seminary with their contexts.”
