BSK alumni study how trauma interacts with theology and the practice of pastoral care

Dr. Mark Medley, Professor of Theology and Interim Academic Dean at BSK, invited BSK alumni to audit, “Trauma, Theology, and Pastoral Practice” that is being taught by Dr. Medley and Rev. Anastasia Holman this semester. 5 alumni ended up auditing this course, and have greatly added to the class discussion.

Dr. Medley says, “I enjoy auditors participating in seminary classrooms because they bring diverse and unique perspectives that greatly enrich the learning community. And it is especially delightful when alumni return to share her or his scholarly interests and lived experience.”

Laura Edgar, one BSK alumna who is auditing this course, says, “Everyone is dealing with individual and/or collective trauma. Unfortunately, churches and religious institutions have not always been well equipped to recognize or walk with people through trauma. As a minister in a local congregation, I’m grateful BSK has provided the opportunity to audit Trauma, Theology, and Pastoral Care. I’m excited for the ways this class will help me better understand how trauma affects people and how I can care for my congregation in more holistic ways.”

BSK alumni can audit courses for free! If you are a BSK alumni and are interested in auditing a course, contact Abby Sizemore, Director of Admissions, at abby.sizemore@bsk.edu.
