BSK 2020

BSK 2020
BSK has made great strides across a number of initiatives in 2020. Scroll down to view highlights of our accomplishments!

Distance Education

BSK began distance education in March due to the pandemic. Already well down the road and familiar with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc., BSK faculty and staff engaged in more intensive training over the summer to enhance our teaching and learning experience. This distance education opportunity has been vital for NBCA leaders who need to study where they serve.

NBCA Partnership

National Baptist Convention of America International, Inc. (NBCA) named BSK as their official seminary during the February 2020 meeting of their board in Tampa, Florida. BSK is the first seminary with whom NBCA has forged such a partnership.

Flourish Center

When the pandemic began, BSK conducted research into how churches were responding to pandemic in terms of ministry and worship. Additionally, 160 persons participated across four workshop series with the Flourish Center in 2020. More workshops are planned for 2021.

Virginia Partnership

In November, BSK was selected as a preferred provider of a distance education option for theological schools. A new BSK Virginia Advisory team is going to help shape and promote the new program. Additionally, a new fund entitled the Virginia theological education fund will support BSK students in Virginia. BSK will begin welcoming Virginia students in Fall 2021.

Revised M.Div Curriculum

At the beginning of 2020, BSK faculty and staff went on a retreat to St. Meinrad Archabbey to revision our curriculum and make plans for new programs to be offered starting in Fall 2020. As a result of this retreat, we moved from a 90 to 75 hour requirement for the M.Div degree. We also infused our curriculum with Black church history, theology and voices.

ATS Reaccreditation

In February, a self-study committee of the Association for Theological Schools (ATS) visited BSK in person to evaluate our reaccreditation. In July, we received the wonderful news that we were awarded 10 more years of accreditation before a self-study will be performed again. This is the maximum time allowed! The self-study committee noted our work in racial justice and our curriculum development.
